Today we set goals as readers, and we read! It was a pleasant, rewarding start to the day. Later in the day when we read Wonder, we discussed character traits and created a character web as a group. We thought of characters in our personal reading books and began to think of character traits they possess. we reviewed place value, the different forms used to express a number, and exponents. We all seem ready for the quiz tomorrow. We did a very short time on Front Row math. We reviewed the western states and the continents and oceans. We word processed our Recyclable Structure stories, and added details. We had band and PE today too. We discussed classroom jobs and came to consensus regarding what jobs we think are necessary. It was a lovely day.
Students shared reports of sports and family news this morning. We worked on math and took a reading assessment this morning. We also had Pe or Chorus. We read Wonder after lunch. We did FrontRow math and studied our western states and capitals.
Don't forget no school on Wednesday! Today we had our first library with Ms. Halpern. We worked on our structure writing, Front Row math, and a map of the western United States. We read Wonder, and we ended the day celebrating 5th grade August and September birthdays.
Today we had our first fire drill, and we did a super job of getting out of the building quietly and orderly! We wrote narratives about our sculptures, and we had PE and Band. We did Front Row Math and did multiplication and division of numbers such as 1.765 x 100. We discussed the capitals of some of the western states, and we read Wonder aloud. (We are at the part when Auggie visits his new school.) We also read independently and some students enjoyed the comfortable pull out room.
After Cove in Motion, we had Chorus and PE. We then discussed how to learn the continents and oceans and how to begin learning the states and capitals. We completed group work reflections on the recyclable projects we did yesterday. After recess we had a long math period. We added to our Four 4s chart, and then we did place value work related to base ten units from millions to thousandths. We practiced our addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts, and we did Front Row math. After lunch we tidied the classroom and our cubbies for Back to School Night.
Today was a fun day. After CIM, we had PE or Band. We played our instruments in band! After recess we had Tinker Time. Working in teams, we created sculptures from the recyclable materials we brought in. We created a bridge, an amusement park, a lighthouse, a space station, and an Hawaiian garden. We did FrontRow math, and we had art with Ms. Mason.
Don't forget that Back to School NIght is tomorrow! This morning we had our first official Cove in Motion. It was cold! We did the Peanut Butter Jelly Time, and Boom-Boom-Pow, and 5-6-7-8. We took a pretest in social studies to see how many of the continents and oceans we know. We watched a video about how everyone can be good at math. Then we did a math activity called Four 4s. We did more work with place value using expanded form, standard form, and word form. We read and responded to a nonfiction article called "Better Living in Chicago." We had four people absent today and we missed them. Outdoor Ed forms are coming home today. If lost, you may print out another copy from the Homework page. We had PE and Chorus. We played a relay race game. We sang a song from Frozen.
Friday already! Where did the time go? The day began with an assembly followed by a practice Cove in Motion. Our parking spot for CIM is on the new blacktop. We did place value charts before going to recess. After recess and a lovely snack, we went to our first library time. We chose two realistic fiction books each. After that we did Front Row math on our new Chromebooks. After lunch, Ms. King read Wonder to us, and everyone loved it. We corrected the reading comprehension page from yesterday and did a few more minutes of Front Row math. After we finish this newsletter we are going to take a moment or two to make a list of class jobs.
