SLJ presents our top picks for summer reading, from read-alouds to share with young listeners to engrossing titles for tweens and teens. The majority of the titles have been published over the last two years, almost all of them are available as ebooks, and many of them have received starred reviews or been selected as past Best Books. New lists will publish over the next six weeks, guaranteeing you a full season of Hot Reads!

Children’s Choices Reading List 2020
ILA/CBC Children’s Choices Reading List 2020 is voted on by 12,500 school children from all over the United States, this list is published by the International Literacy Association and the Children’s Book Council. It is organized by age group and format: beginning readers (kindergarten to grade two), young readers (grades three to four), and advanced readers (grades five to six).
Update from ILA: As a result of disruptions to schools and businesses caused by COVID-19, the Choices reading program has been suspended for the upcoming year 2020–2021. The 2020 reading lists are listed.
Appropriate Books for Advanced Readers
Another resource that some parents may find helpful is The Children’s Book Council’s Reading Beyond: Advanced Reader List 2020-2021. These lists can help parents find an appropriate book for an advanced reader. Previous years’ lists are here.
