In the lower grades we reviewed fiction and nonfiction and where to locate them in the library. We read parts of three books on whales and discussed if they are fiction or nonfiction.
In the higher elementary grades we discussed theme as we read the beautiful new book, The Bear and the Piano.
All students chose books, but a few classes had assignments to find specific genres. Ms. Beery's third graders found nonfiction books to support their expert topics for informational writing. Soon they can teach us all about: baseball, dance, China, football, mosquitoes, frogs, chess, holidays, hanging a door, tennis, snowboarding, water, golf, technology, pizza, dogs!
Ms. Osterman's third graders found narrative nonfiction books to use in class.
Ms. DeMartini and Mr. Reiter's fifth grade students chose historical fiction books for an upcoming project. Mr. Owens and Ms. Emmons' students chose mystery, fantasy, or science fiction books.
